Swimming Australia 2020 National Virtual Open Short Course

December 4, 2020

The club was well represented at the first virtual event - the Open Nationals Short Course

Congratulations to all WMP swimmers who competed on the weekend of 26-28 November. We had some exceptional performances from all athletes!

In a year like no other, Swimming Australia’s Australian Short Course Championships, set to be held in Melbourne, had a drastic overhaul. An event which has been hosted by Melbourne for the previous two years saw an Australia-wide effort as Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania all held their very own version of the event.

Melbourne based swimmers competed against their Melbourne competitors physically and virtually against the rest of Australia. There is an immense sense of achievement for each and every swimmer as this competition reflected the first time Melbourne has held an official Championship event since February and one of the first sporting events in the state.

These swimmers have paved the way forward for the remainder of the state and proved that time out of the water hasn’t impacted their future success in the sport.

The following WMP swimmers achieved these amazing results:

Brianna Donato – Coinciding with the end of her VCE exams and conclusion of high schooling, Brianna’s best placing was 13th in the 1500m freestyle.

Robbe Dilissen – Our distance specialist. Robbe’s best placing was 15th in the 1500m freestyle.

Liam Laidlaw – Liam raced strongly across his freestyle and medley events. He placed 20th in the 200m IM and dropped a massive PB in his 200m freestyle.

Nicholas Layton *World Record Holder* – Nicholas finished with five event placings in the top 10. This included 2nd in the 50m butterfly, 2nd in the 100m freestyle and 3rd in the 100m freestyle. Congratulations to Nicholas as his efforts in the 50m butterfly and 100m freestyle were also world records.

Ray Oo – Ray represented Mynamar and WMP in this competition. Ray’s best placing was 15th in the 50m freestyle.

Adam Selwood – Adam shaved 0.01 off his 100m breaststroke and placed 13th in the 200m breaststroke.

Johann Stickland – Johann was the only WMP swimmer under the age of 18. He placed 13th in the 100m IM.

Lushavel Stickland – Lushavel represented Samoa and WMP in this competition, and placed 17th in the 50m backstroke.

Luka Zubcic – Luka experienced success across 50m freestyle and butterfly, 100m and 200m freestyle, achieving PBs in several events. His highest placing was 12th in the 50m freestyle.

We also had several relays competing at this meet. Of note was our men's 4 x 50m freestyle relay, comprising Johann, Liam, Ray and Luka, which came 4th in Australia, less than a second off first place!

Well done all.
