During the last few weeks, one of our athletes, Win Htet Oo (also known as Ray), has made the news.
Ray has taken a strong stand against the current situation in Myanmar, his home country, and has declined to be considered for selection on the Myanmar Olympic Team.
Ray is one of Myanmar's top swimmers, and it has been his lifelong ambition to represent his country at the world's most prestigious competition. However, he has abandoned his dream of competing at the Tokyo Olympics for Myanmar in protest at the military junta's takeover of his homeland.
Refusing to compete under Myanmar's flag is Ray's way of joining the movement against the ongoing violence. Our club stands behind Ray and his decision. This is an incredible personal sacrifice on his part. We believe Ray stands for everything that is good about the Olympic movement and in taking this step, he represents the true Olympic values which all athletes strive to achieve.
Our club is proud of Ray, not only as an athlete, but as an individual with high ethical standards, and a willingness to stand for what he believes in. Photo: AFP/Asanka Brendon Ratnayake
